The problem
Intervention: Integrated package of health and nutrition education and promotion of home gardening
Who it was tested with: Children under five years and mothers who delivered in the past 24 months in intervention and control districts in Tanzania.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Two rounds of household surveys were done to assess changes in behaviors (uptake of Antenatal Care services and child feeding practices) and stunting among children under-5 years" with "difference in difference (DID) analysis used to estimate effect of the interventions." The quasi-experimental design with comparison sites and before-after measurement allows causal inference, though the lack of stunting improvement despite behavioral gains suggests either insufficient duration or that intermediate outcomes alone are insufficient for the final outcome.
The study ran for only 3 years, which the authors suggest may be insufficient duration to observe stunting reduction despite behavioral improvements. The document does not specify intervention coverage, adherence rates, or cost.
