The problem
Intervention: Family-mediated manual therapy (FMMT) with caregiver training in five manual therapy modules emphasizing ecological plasticity principles, delivered through twice-weekly therapist-supervised sessions (45-60 min) plus daily home practice (2-3 h) over 12 weeks.
Who it was tested with: 21 children with confirmed spastic cerebral palsy (GMFCS levels I-III, ages 5-12): 9 in institutional settings in France and 12 in home-based care in Cameroon..
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Caregivers received progressive training in five manual therapy modules emphasizing ecological plasticity principles, delivered through twice-weekly therapist-supervised sessions (45-60 min each) complemented by daily home practice of 2-3 h." The study measured motor outcomes and costs before and after the 12-week intervention in both settings, finding clinically meaningful improvements at lower cost, though the absence of a control group prevents determination of whether improvements would have occurred without the intervention.
No randomized control group limits causal inference; small sample size (n=21) limits generalizability; three unrelated deaths in Cameroon cohort complicate outcome interpretation; no long-term follow-up data reported beyond 12 weeks; cost comparison is exploratory only.
