The problem
Intervention: Hepatitis B vaccination series according to US recommendations
Who it was tested with: US-born children and adolescents aged 2-18 years.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We used data from the 2017-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to include US-born participants aged 2 to 18 years who had complete hepatitis B serological data and vaccination history." This population-level surveillance study provides prevalence estimates but cannot explain the mechanism of declining antibody levels or test interventions to improve immune response.
Cross-sectional design prevents assessment of individual immunity trajectories; cannot determine whether antibody loss occurred post-vaccination or reflects incomplete initial response; unclear whether low seropositivity reflects waning immunity or poor initial response.
