The problem
Intervention: Daily micronutrient powders (4 months after peak malaria season) combined with two rounds of seasonal malaria chemoprevention per year
Who it was tested with: Children aged 6-59 months in intervention communities and children aged 3-59 months receiving malaria chemoprevention in both arms, in southern Mali.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"The 60 communities were randomly allocated to the intervention or control arm, and cross-sectional biomedical and cognitive surveys were conducted after 1 and 3 years in a random sample of 3 and 5 years olds." This is a cluster-randomised design with comparison groups and follow-up measurements over time, meeting the standard for experimental evidence.
The study did not identify reasons for lack of effectiveness; the document does not explain whether inadequate dose, timing, or other contextual factors may have limited impact.
