The problem
Intervention: Journey of Life (JoL), a caregiver psychosocial support intervention
Who it was tested with: Caregivers in the Kiryandongo refugee settlement in Western Uganda (n=1,200; 600 intervention, 600 control).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A waitlist-control quasi-experimental design is being implemented in the Kiryandongo refugee settlement (intervention n = 600, control n = 600)." The waitlist-control design allows comparison of intervention and control groups with measurement of primary and secondary outcomes to assess whether the Journey of Life intervention improves caregiver mental health and caregiving practices.
This is a protocol, not a results paper. No outcome data are available. The quasi-experimental design with a waitlist control is appropriate but not as strong as a randomised design. Findings are specific to one refugee settlement in Uganda.
