The problem
Intervention: Six months of integrated health-promotion activities at the household level and support for health-care facilities, including medical supplies, health worker incentives, and outreach to remote areas.
Who it was tested with: 895 households of internally displaced persons and host communities in four Yemeni governorates.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"A pre- and post-intervention study was conducted among 895 households of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities in four Yemeni governorates. The intervention included health-promotion activities at the household level and support for health facilities in the catchment areas of IDPs... The effect size of the intervention was estimated using Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE)." This describes a before-after measurement with statistical modeling but no comparison group, making it a PRE_POST design.
The pre-post design without a comparison group cannot rule out secular trends or other contextual factors. The study measured outcomes over only six months. No significant improvement in child fecal matter disposal or acute malnutrition suggests the intervention had incomplete coverage or that additional complementary interventions (food security, livelihood support) are needed.
