The problem
Intervention: Explicit instruction in expository and narrative discourse structure with visual supports and student-generated learning materials
Who it was tested with: Late elementary and middle school-aged students (9-14 years) with language-related learning disabilities.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"A methodical search of the literature for interventions targeting expository or narrative discourse structure for students aged 9-14 years with group experimental designs identified 33 studies, seven of which met specific criteria to be included in this review." The systematic review evaluated multiple controlled trials to synthesize evidence on discourse intervention effectiveness, finding mixed results depending on whether outcomes were measured within or outside the treatment setting.
Only 7 of 33 identified studies met inclusion criteria, suggesting limited high-quality evidence. The review focused on group experimental designs only, potentially excluding other valid evidence. Generalization of findings is limited by the small number of included studies.
