The problem
Intervention: 30 life skills sessions delivered in safe spaces for adolescent girls plus 8 complementary sessions for caregivers
Who it was tested with: 919 Sudanese and South Sudanese refugee adolescent girls aged 13-19 years in refugee camps in Ethiopia.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"In this two-arm, single-blinded, cluster randomised controlled trial, we recruited 919 Sudanese and South Sudanese girls ages 13-19 years residing in refugee camps in Ethiopia... Intervention clusters received 30 life skills sessions delivered in safe spaces and 8 complementary sessions for caregivers." The design is a rigorous randomised controlled trial with a defined comparison group, making it EXPERIMENTAL tier evidence.
Single-blinded design; the intervention affected intermediate outcomes (attitudes and social support) but not the primary violence outcomes, suggesting either insufficient intervention intensity, duration or effectiveness in the specific context. Generalisability to other refugee or humanitarian settings unknown.
