The problem
Intervention: Daily micronutrient-fortified hot drink (atole, 'Chispuditos', with 9 mg zinc and 12.5 mg iron) for 18 months, compared with lactose-free milk
Who it was tested with: 971 children aged 6 to 72 months (681 fortified drink, 290 milk) in a region with high stunting prevalence.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"In a randomised control trial, 971 children aged 6–72 months received either ‘Chispuditos®’" — children were randomly assigned to groups and compared, which fits an experimental design.
The comparison was against milk rather than no supplement. The setting is not named in the abstract. Adherence was incomplete (73% consumed at least half the requirement). Only the abstract was reviewed.
