The problem
Intervention: Early childhood experiences including outdoor play, risky play, and screen time exposure
Who it was tested with: 4,968 children (51.1% male, 48.9% female) entering kindergarten in British Columbia in 2023-2024.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"This longitudinal study linked data from children (n = 4968) entering kindergarten in British Columbia in 2023 and 2024. Data from the Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (CHEQ) were linked with the Early Development Instrument (EDI)." The design uses baseline measures of early experiences linked to later developmental outcomes, allowing assessment of prospective associations though not establishing causation.
Study uses caregiver-reported exposure and teacher-reported outcomes; cross-sectional analysis limits causal inference; does not account for unmeasured confounders or selection bias
