The problem
Intervention: Xiao'er Fengreqing Oral Liquid (XFQOL), a traditional Chinese medicine, administered for 5 days
Who it was tested with: 120 children with acute pharyngitis/tonsillitis enrolled from three tertiary hospitals in China.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"This multicenter, block-randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, active-controlled trial enrolled 120 children from three tertiary hospitals. Participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive either XFQOL plus Xiao'er Yanbian Granules (XYG) placebo (XFQOL group, n = 60) or XYG plus XFQOL placebo (control group, n = 60) for 5 days." The study used randomization and blinding with an active control group, which provides stronger evidence than before-after designs, though the non-inferiority framing suggests the treatment was expected to match rather than exceed standard care.
Non-inferiority design means the study was not powered to detect superiority; follow-up limited to 5 days; single-country setting; uses subjective pain rating scale rather than objective clinical markers.
