The problem
Intervention: Robot-assisted special education tutoring using a humanoid robot (NAO) with teacher support versus standard teacher-delivered special education
Who it was tested with: Elementary school children (grades 3-4) with diagnosed specific learning disorders in Greece.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"the participants were prospectively and randomly allocated to two groups: (a) the SR group, for which the intervention was delivered by the humanoid robot NAO with the assistance of a special education teacher and (b) the control group, for which the intervention was delivered by the special educator. All participants underwent pre- and post-intervention evaluation for outcome measures." This is a randomized controlled trial comparing robot-assisted instruction to standard teacher instruction with pre-post measurement in both groups.
Small sample size; single-country study; emotional and behavioral outcomes showed no change in either group; effect sizes and detailed statistical significance not reported for most measures
