The problem
Intervention: Reduced-dose (two-dose) RotaTeq vaccination schedule implemented in Quebec, compared to approved three-dose schedule in Ontario and British Columbia
Who it was tested with: Children aged 6-23 months in three Canadian provinces (Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia) between September 2006 and March 2023.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A difference-in-differences approach using Poisson regression was used to compare admission rates for rotavirus-associated acute gastroenteritis...before and after the implementation of a reduced-dose RotaTeq vaccination schedule in Quebec." This quasi-experimental design with comparison provinces provides stronger evidence than a simple before-after study by controlling for temporal trends, allowing assessment of whether the schedule change affected outcomes beyond expected trends.
The 95% confidence intervals include or approach the null value, indicating uncertainty about whether the two-dose schedule has truly equivalent efficacy; hospital admissions data may not capture milder cases; relatively small number of events in the post-implementation period limits statistical power.
