The problem
Intervention: Familia Bora: a multicomponent, father-inclusive parenting program integrating content on parenting, couples' relationships, mental health, and gender equality, delivered by community health workers over 17 weekly group sessions with both mothers and fathers
Who it was tested with: 396 father-mother-child triads with children aged 0-24 months in 33 villages in Mwanza Region, Tanzania.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Thirty-three villages in Misungwi and Sengerema districts in Mwanza Region, Tanzania were randomly assigned to receive the Familia Bora program or continue standard-of-care services. In each village, 12 couples with a child aged 0-24 months were randomly selected, for a total of 396 enrolled father-mother-child triads. The intervention will be delivered over 17 weekly sessions by trained CHWs in community group sessions with fathers and mothers participating together throughout." This demonstrates a cluster-randomized experimental design with clear allocation to intervention or control conditions and a defined population.
This is a study protocol for a planned trial; outcomes have not yet been measured. The study is described as a pilot effectiveness-implementation trial, suggesting it may be limited in scale and preliminary in nature.
