The problem
Intervention: NutriVax: a monthly ration of small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS) given to children aged 6-23 months after routine immunization delivery at primary healthcare centers
Who it was tested with: Children aged 6-23 months (primary outcome among those aged 12-23 months) in 20 clusters across two Local Government Areas in northern Nigeria.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"pragmatic, cluster-randomized controlled trial in northern Nigeria" - Clusters were randomly assigned to intervention or control, which makes this a randomised design with a comparison group.
Outcomes were measured through cross-sectional surveys, only 48% of children in intervention clusters had ever received the supplement, and the study was limited to two Local Government Areas in northern Nigeria.
