The problem
Intervention: Cash transfer programmes targeted to households with children under 5 years old
Who it was tested with: Households with children under 5 years old in countries with GDP per capita below US$10,000.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"We conducted meta-analysis using random-effects models to assess the impact of CT programmes on selected child nutrition outcomes" and "Out of 2862 articles identified, 74 articles were eligible for inclusion." This represents a systematic synthesis of quantitative impact evaluations, which is an experimental evidence tier approach.
The meta-analysis aggregated diverse programme designs and contexts, which may mask important variations in effectiveness. Individual studies had varying quality and follow-up periods. Effect sizes were generally modest. The review cannot establish causation in individual studies or identify optimal programme design features.
