The problem
Intervention: Monitoring vaccination programs and identifying children who missed doses during pandemic disruptions
Who it was tested with: Children in Alberta, Canada due for measles, pertussis, and rotavirus vaccination in 2020 (106,530 children in 2020 cohort versus 114,178 in 2019 comparison cohort).
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"In this retrospective cohort study, population-based administrative health data were analysed to determine the vaccination coverage for measles-containing, pertussis-containing and rotavirus vaccines... comparing children due for vaccination in each month of 2019 and 2020, with follow-up to determine if missed doses were caught up later." The study measured the same vaccines in the same age-eligible children across two time periods to assess pandemic impact.
The study design compares two years but does not include a control group unaffected by pandemic disruptions. It identifies coverage gaps but does not explain underlying causes or measure health outcomes from delayed vaccination. The study follows up on missed doses but does not assess whether all catch-up occurred.
