The problem
Intervention: Audit of immunisation prescribing quality, timeliness assessment, and electronic registry recording with identification of errors and recommendations for improvement including pharmacy review, education, and dedicated immunisation services
Who it was tested with: Children aged 16 years or less receiving inpatient vaccinations at a tertiary paediatric hospital in Perth, Australia.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We conducted an observational, retrospective review of inpatient immunisations at Perth Children's Hospital from July 2018 to February 2019. Inpatient vaccine prescriptions for children aged 16 years or less were obtained from hospital medical records, prescription charts and pharmacy dispensing databases." This was a cross-sectional audit examining current practice without a comparison arm or intervention trial, representing practitioner-level evidence identifying real-world prescribing and recording gaps.
Single-site retrospective audit with no control group and no assessment of clinical outcomes from the identified errors. Study did not evaluate the effectiveness of proposed interventions such as pharmacist education or dedicated immunisation services.
