The problem
Intervention: Social robot (semi-autonomous, using Wizard of Oz) engaging in storytelling exercises with direct human-robot interaction, compared to tablet-based learning
Who it was tested with: Primary school children aged 4-6 years (N=63), including migrant children.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Primary school children (N = 63, aged 4–6) participated in a 3-wave field experiment with story-telling exercises, either with a semi-autonomous robot (without tablet, using WOz) or a tablet." The experimental design with random assignment to robot or tablet conditions, measured at three time points, constitutes a quasi-experimental field study with a comparison group.
Small sample size (N=63), narrow age range (4-6 years only), single context (Netherlands), short duration (3 waves), and limited task scope (storytelling only). The study does not report effect sizes, statistical significance levels, or long-term retention of learning gains.
