The problem
Intervention: Study identifying risk factors to inform future interventions; recommendations include strengthening adolescent reproductive health education, community awareness, and parent-adolescent sexual and reproductive health communication
Who it was tested with: 422 adolescent girls aged 13-19 in Kule refugee camp, Gambella, Ethiopia.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"A community-based mixed cross-sectional study was done among 422 adolescent girls. Participants were selected using a systematic sampling technique. A structured, pre-tested, and interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. Binary and multivariable logistic regression was used to identify associated factors... For the qualitative part, four focused group discussion sessions were done, and participants were selected purposely." This study describes associations and risk factors but makes no causal claims or intervention evaluations.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation or test interventions. The study identifies associations but does not evaluate the effectiveness of any intervention program. Results are specific to one refugee camp.
