The problem
Intervention: Child allowance payment from the government to families
Who it was tested with: 1st, 5th, and 8th grade children living in Kochi prefecture, Japan (N = 8,207).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Propensity score matching analysis regarding potential confounders was used." The study matched families receiving and not receiving the allowance on observed characteristics to create comparable groups, approximating an experimental design within observational data.
Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference. Cannot determine mechanism of action or how families use the allowance. Data is from 2016 and limited to one prefecture in Japan.
