The problem
Intervention: Participation in out-of-home activities including community events (movies, sporting events), recreation facilities (playgrounds, swimming pools), cultural venues (concerts, museums), libraries, and religious services
Who it was tested with: Australian children with disabilities (n=2,480 unique children, 3,694 observations).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Panel regression (random-effects) model was employed, controlling for child and family-level covariates." This longitudinal design with multiple time points and statistical controls for confounding variables strengthens causal inference compared to cross-sectional work, though causality cannot be definitively established without randomisation.
Observational design precludes causal inference; selection bias possible if children with better baseline health participate more; specific to Australian context; HRQoL measured via parent/caregiver report which may not capture child perspective
