The problem
Intervention: Family support, with mechanisms including fostering saving attitudes and improving communication between adolescents and guardians
Who it was tested with: 702 adolescent boys and girls aged 10-16 years perinatally infected with HIV in Uganda.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Structural equation models were conducted to assess the direct, indirect, and total effects of family support on adherence." The study uses longitudinal data and mediation analysis to test pathways through which family support influences adherence, which is a quasi-experimental approach examining mechanisms of effect, placing it in the experimental tier.
Study design uses longitudinal data but does not explicitly state randomization; reliance on self-reported adherence rather than objective measures; cross-sectional associations at any given timepoint cannot prove causality.
