Intervention: Identification and monitoring of psychiatric symptoms over time in adolescents with special educational needs
Who it was tested with: 247 adolescents aged 13-22 years with special educational needs (estimated IQ 50-80) in Scotland.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"They completed the CIS at baseline (T1), 1–2 years later (T2) and 6 years later (T3). At T3, the participants also completed the World Health Organisation Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHO-DAS) to measure the degree of functional impairment." The study measured psychiatric symptoms at multiple points and examined correlation with later functional outcomes, but lacks control or comparison groups and uses correlational statistics which cannot establish predictive relationships.
Correlational design cannot establish causation. Statistical significance was lost after multiple comparison correction, suggesting findings may be due to chance. No comparison group to determine whether associations are specific to those with special educational needs. Effect sizes not reported.
