The problem
Intervention: A mobile app prototype designed using value-sensitive design principles to support teen online safety through communication and trust-building rather than restriction and monitoring
Who it was tested with: Parents and children ages 10-17.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"we developed a mobile app prototype suggesting alternative designs for keeping teens safe online and conducted a user study which showed that parents and children (ages 10-17) both significantly preferred our new app design over existing parental control apps." The study directly tested a design intervention with the target population, but measured preference rather than behavioral outcomes or actual safety impact.
The study evaluated user preferences for a prototype rather than measuring actual use or effectiveness in reducing online harms or changing teen behavior in real-world conditions. No comparison group or randomization was used.
