The problem
Intervention: Diversified segmental defocus optimization (DSDO) lenses fitted and worn by children and adolescents
Who it was tested with: Children and adolescents aged 6 to 16 years with myopia or without myopia, recruited from 8 Aier Eye Hospital Group centers in China.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Prospective, multicenter, clinical practice study" with "Axial length was measured at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months after treatment initiation. Propensity score matching (PSM) was applied to balance baseline characteristics." This design with matched comparison groups and repeated measurements over time constitutes an experimental approach to evaluating intervention efficacy.
Single healthcare system in one country limits external validity; small absolute differences in axial elongation may not be clinically meaningful; potential unmeasured confounding despite propensity score matching
