The problem
Intervention: Assessment of maternal depression and maternal agency as factors associated with child malnutrition
Who it was tested with: 488 children under 2 years and their mothers from 50 villages in rural India.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"This was Community based cross sectional study conducted in 50 identified villages for near 'Bor' forest area and the total sample size was 488... The association was tested using t-test, there is no statistically significant association of maternal depression with stunting, wasting and underweight. There is association of maternal agency with wasting." The study measured maternal factors and child nutritional outcomes in a defined rural population but lacked a comparison group and could not establish causation.
Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference; no comparison or control group; unexpected null finding for maternal depression may reflect measurement issues or complex multi-factorial causes of malnutrition
