The problem
Intervention: Assessment of barriers to immunisation and identification of factors associated with vaccination status to inform tailored interventions
Who it was tested with: 313 refugee Afghan children aged under 2 years in suburban Mashhad, Islamic Republic of Iran.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Using a locally adapted version of the WHO standard immunisation coverage questionnaire, we collected immunisation data from 313 refugee Afghan children aged ˂2 years in suburban Mashhad, Islamic Republic of Iran. Immunisation status was confirmed using immunisation cards or maternal recall if cards were unavailable." The study identified barriers preventing vaccination but did not test an intervention to overcome them, making this a descriptive assessment rather than an effectiveness evaluation.
Cross-sectional design cannot determine causation. Some vaccination data based on maternal recall rather than cards may be inaccurate. No comparison group to assess if barriers differ from other populations.
