The problem
Intervention: Repeated assessment of maternal mental health and early developmental support after preterm birth
Who it was tested with: 286 mother-preterm infant dyads from a tertiary hospital in Wuhan, China, followed during first year of corrected age.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"In the cross-lagged panel model, maternal depressive symptoms at the third assessment were associated with lower neurodevelopment scores at 12 months corrected age" and "Persistent maternal depressive symptoms were associated with a higher risk of overall developmental abnormality at 12 months corrected age." The study uses longitudinal measurement with multiple timepoints to examine temporal relationships between maternal depression and infant outcomes, meeting experimental criteria through prospective design and advanced statistical modeling of associations.
Observational design prevents causal inference; cannot determine direction of effects; sample limited to one tertiary hospital; no comparison of intervention versus control group for the recommended assessment and support
