The problem
Intervention: Longitudinal measurement and analysis of parent-child aggression risk, intimate partner violence victimization and perpetration, and perceived child behavior problems over time to understand reciprocal associations
Who it was tested with: First-time mothers and their male partners followed from child age 18 months to approximately 4 years old.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Hypotheses were tested with autoregressive cross-lagged path models, which were estimated for mothers and fathers separately as well as dyadically." This design allows examination of reciprocal relationships between variables over time with comparison between family members, enabling detection of bidirectional and crossover effects while controlling for prior levels of each variable.
Study relies on self-reported data from parents; results are correlational rather than causal; sample limited to first-time parents; no objective measures of abuse or violence independent of parental reports.
