The problem
Intervention: Maternal smartphone use during parent-child interactions
Who it was tested with: German parent-child dyads; main analysis 5954 completing online questionnaire, subset of 972 in psychiatric interview.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"a self-administered online questionnaire was used to collect basic sociodemographic data, smartphone use behavior and the mother's subjective perception of the infant's RD. In case of psychosocial burden of the mother, a structured psychiatric-diagnostic interview (M.I.N.I.) was conducted and the Questionnaire for Crying, Feeding and Sleeping (SFS) was completed." The study measured maternal smartphone use and infant regulatory outcomes cross-sectionally within the cohort, with subgroup undergoing standardized diagnostic assessment.
Cross-sectional observational design cannot establish causality; bidirectional association likely. Relies on maternal self-report of both smartphone use and infant behaviour. Post hoc analysis of existing data not designed for this research question.
