The problem
Intervention: Home-based early childhood development intervention delivered through bi-weekly home visits over 18 months using an adapted Nurturing Care Framework curriculum covering nutrition, maternal wellness, child health, developmental milestones, and interactive caregiving
Who it was tested with: Mothers living with HIV and their children born HIV-exposed but uninfected, aged 6-24 months, living in peri-urban Lusaka, Zambia (n=308, with 153 in intervention and 155 in control).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We conducted a randomized controlled trial of an ECD intervention for mothers living with HIV and their children born HIV-exposed, aged six to 24 months, living in peri-urban Lusaka. The intervention was delivered through bi-weekly home visits over 18 months using the curriculum adapted from the Nurturing Care Framework." This represents a rigorous experimental design with random allocation, blinded assessment, and standardized measurement tools applied at multiple time points.
Study measures only developmental outcomes using two assessment tools; does not report on other health or nutritional outcomes; follow-up was limited to 18 months and longer-term sustainability is unknown
