The problem
Intervention: Implementation of a maternal perinatal death surveillance and response system as a quality-of-care improvement strategy
Who it was tested with: Women who gave birth and their newborns at a regional hospital in northeast Namibia.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"A pre-post intervention study design was conducted. Quantitative routine facility data was collected for women who gave birth and their babies from January 2019-December 2021." The design compares the same facility before surveillance system implementation (January-May 2019) against after implementation (June 2019-December 2021), with statistical testing of mortality rates to show intervention impact.
Pre-post design without a comparison facility group; relies on routine facility data that may have quality or reporting variations; unable to attribute causation definitively to the intervention alone; other contextual changes during 2019-2021 not controlled.
