The problem
Intervention: Learning Together: staff training in restorative practice, establishment of a school action group, and a student social and emotional skills curriculum
Who it was tested with: Secondary school students in south-east England; 6667 students at baseline across 40 schools (20 intervention, 20 control).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We did a cluster randomised trial, with economic and process evaluations, of the Learning Together intervention compared with standard practice (controls) over 3 years in secondary schools in south-east England... [with] intention-to-treat longitudinal mixed-effects models." The study used a robust experimental design with random allocation of schools and long-term follow-up to evaluate intervention effectiveness on defined outcomes.
The effect size on bullying, while statistically significant, was small (-0.08). No effect was found on aggression outcomes. Study limited to secondary schools in south-east England, potentially limiting generalizability.
