The problem
Intervention: An 8-week small-group sound games supplement using familiar words from standard pupil materials, structured with 'I do, We do, You do' routine, delivered to groups of six to eight learners for approximately 20 minutes per session (24 sessions planned)
Who it was tested with: Primary Two children in eight schools in central Uganda; 152 children completed post-test assessment (intervention and comparison arms).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Eight classrooms in eight schools were randomized after baseline assessment to either the supplement or standard P2 Luganda teaching." The study used randomization with comparison groups and measured outcomes at baseline and post-test, meeting criteria for an experimental design, though findings are exploratory and warrant confirmation in a larger trial.
Only eight clusters with no long-term follow-up on decoding, spelling, or comprehension; proximal outcomes only; possible partial unmasking during assessments; small sample size limits generalizability.
