The problem
Intervention: Multimodal treatment combining behavioral intervention with intravenous Cerebrolysin (10.0mg in 200.0mL sodium chloride solution, 15 doses)
Who it was tested with: 54 adolescent girls aged 12-14 with anorexia nervosa and recurrent depression.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"The study design includes clinical psychopathological, somatic-neurological, and psychological methods for examination of 54 adolescent girls aged 12-14, with a recurrent depression, and factors determine disorders in alimentary behavior" and "Results in all adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa depressive disorders were present in prepuberty." The researchers measured participants at baseline and after treatment with the same assessment tools, but lacked a comparison group to verify whether the reported improvements were attributable to the intervention.
No control or comparison group; unclear outcome measurement time points; no long-term follow-up; unclear whether improvements persisted or if this represents short-term response only; small sample size; potential for medication effects to be confounded with behavioral intervention effects.
