The problem
Intervention: Single-dose baloxavir marboxil compared to five-day course of oseltamivir
Who it was tested with: 750 children aged 5-14 years with RT-PCR-confirmed influenza A in community health centers in Chongqing, China.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Treatment assignment was based on guardian preference rather than randomization" and "the study was reported following STROBE guidelines for observational research." The prospective cohort design with baseline and follow-up measurements allows comparison of outcomes between treatment groups, but preference-based assignment rather than randomization limits causal inference.
Non-randomized preference-based assignment creates selection bias; open-label design enables performance and detection bias; influenza subtypes and antiviral resistance not evaluated; findings acknowledged as hypothesis-generating rather than causal
