The problem
Intervention: Reflective Interpersonal Therapy for Children and Parents (RICAP), a new treatment involving both children and parents
Who it was tested with: 105 children aged 4-10 years referred to UK Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services; 70 were eligible for randomization after initial parent training (Incredible Years).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Children still above clinical threshold after IY were randomized either to RICAP or to usual CAMHS treatment (CTAU) with follow up 8 months later." This is a standard RCT design with a comparison group and follow-up measurement, meeting criteria for experimental evidence tier, though the contradictory outcomes by reporter suggest the intervention's true effect remains unclear.
Pilot study with contradictory findings by reporter type (parent vs. teacher), making true effectiveness unclear. Specific sample sizes for each randomized group not explicitly stated. Only CTAU group could receive school-based interventions, introducing potential confounding.
