The problem
Intervention: Psychosocial interventions including cognitive interventions, play and creative therapies, animal assistance therapy, self-management education, and physical activity
Who it was tested with: Children and adolescents aged 0-19 years living with cancer across the care continuum (1,988 participants across 34 studies in 17 countries).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Studies investigating the effects of cognitive interventions demonstrated a significant positive effect on neurocognitive outcomes... Play and creative therapies, animal assistance therapy, self-management education, and physical activity were associated with a significant overall improvement in psychological outcomes... Animal assistance therapy, play and creative therapies, and physical activity interventions led to a significant improvement in quality-of-life outcomes." This meta-analysis combines results from multiple randomized and quasi-experimental studies with comparison groups to evaluate intervention effectiveness across defined outcomes.
High heterogeneity in some analyses (I² up to 87.1%) suggests substantial variation by intervention type and setting. The review does not clarify optimal intervention timing, dosage, delivery format, or age-specific effects. Studies were from 17 countries but geographic distribution not specified.
