The problem
Intervention: Measurement and analysis of association between violence-related distress (via CCDS scale) and nasal epithelial gene expression profiles
Who it was tested with: Youth aged 8-20 years with asthma (predominantly minoritized children from Puerto Rico and African American backgrounds); 403 total participants across three cohorts.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Cross-sectional analysis of violence-related distress in the previous 6 months (assessed using the Checklist of Children's Distress Symptoms [CCDS] scale) and nasal epithelial gene expression in 3 studies of youth with asthma aged 8-20 years." This design examines associations between exposure and biological markers at one time point without manipulating the exposure or comparing outcomes over time.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causality. No intervention was tested; this is an observational analysis of associations between distress exposure and gene expression. Results require replication and validation before therapeutic application.
