The problem
Intervention: Statewide laws banning tobacco use by students, staff and visitors anywhere on public school grounds
Who it was tested with: Students, teachers and other school staff in U.S. states that did and did not adopt statewide school tobacco bans.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"using stacked difference-in-differences estimators that exploit the time variation in adoption of the laws across states" shows a quasi-experimental design with comparison states, so it counts as the experimental tier.
Abstract gives no numerical estimates, sample details, data sources or subgroup results. The laws were not randomly assigned, so the design relies on assumptions about comparable trends across states.
