The problem
Intervention: Infant formula containing partially hydrolyzed whey and intact protein
Who it was tested with: Healthy full-term infants ≤14 days old (n=78 in intervention group); comparison groups included 70 on standard formula and 70 breastfed infants.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"This multicenter, triple-blind, randomized non-inferiority trial enrolled healthy full-term infants (≤14 days old). Participants were randomized (1:1) to receive pHF (n = 78) or SF (n = 70) until 6 months of age, with propensity score-matched exclusively breastfed (BF) infants (n = 70) serving as the reference." The triple-blind randomized design with comparison groups and specified primary outcome (daily weight gain) represents an experimental study design that can establish whether the intervention causes the observed outcomes.
Study does not specify the geographic location(s), limiting generalizability assessment. Follow-up limited to 6 months does not allow assessment of longer-term effects. No cost-effectiveness analysis provided. The study is a non-inferiority trial rather than proving superiority.
