Intervention: Early identification of fetal malnutrition at birth using the CANSCORE tool to enable targeted nutrition interventions
Who it was tested with: 246 infants enrolled in a birth cohort in Leyte, Philippines; 8 infants (3%) identified with fetal malnutrition.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Infants were evaluated using CANSCORE within 48 h of birth by a trained midwife, and FM was defined as CANSCORE < 25. Weight and length were measured at birth, 1-, 6-, 12-, 18- and 24-month visits." This demonstrates a prospective longitudinal design where a simple screening tool identified at-risk infants early, establishing that such screening could enable targeting of interventions, though the study itself did not test an actual intervention.
Small number of cases with fetal malnutrition (n=8) limited statistical power. No comparison group receiving an intervention versus control group. Single geographic location limits generalisability.
