Intervention: Natural experiment: comparison of families surveyed before versus after school closure on March 16, 2020
Who it was tested with: 281 families of color with children enrolled in 41 pre-kindergarten programs in New York City neighborhoods; 198 families surveyed before closure, 83 families surveyed after closure.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"the quasi-experimental design allows for comparison of the 198 families who had completed the survey prior to March 16, and the 83 families who completed the survey after March 16, using identical protocols and procedures." This natural experiment design leverages the sudden, unexpected school closure timing to create comparison groups, providing quasi-experimental evidence of the closure's immediate effects on family well-being.
The quasi-experimental design compares different families at different times rather than tracking the same families across the closure event. Data were collected during a limited window around the closure date, and the study did not measure longer-term effects or disentangle school closure impacts from broader pandemic stressors.
