The problem
Intervention: Routine RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccination introduced through the EPI in 42 priority health districts in 2024
Who it was tested with: Children under 5 in 206 Cameroonian health districts (42 with the vaccine, 164 without), 2023-2025.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"retrospective, quasi-experimental, ecological longitudinal study using a difference-in-differences (DiD) approach" - this design has a comparison group, so it fits the experimental tier, but the crude results favour the vaccine while the adjusted results are null, so the direction is mixed.
Non-randomised, ecological design; baseline differences in ITN and IPT coverage and population size between groups; likely selection bias and low power; the adjusted estimates were null; averted-case figures are estimates.
