The problem
Intervention: Implementation of revised Government of India Childhood Pneumonia Management Guidelines through Health and Wellness Centres using a three-phase approach: formative research, iterative model testing, and scaled delivery with concurrent evaluation
Who it was tested with: Children under 5 years old in Palwal district, Haryana, India; approximately 2,400 children will be surveyed with ~120 pneumonia cases included in treatment coverage analysis.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"This implementation study uses a quasi-experimental pre-post design and a mixed-methods approach, conducted in three phases: (i) formative research, (ii) model optimisation through iterative testing in a learning block and (iii) scale-up and concurrent evaluation." The study design measures the same population before and after the intervention implementation, with formative and iterative phases to optimise the model prior to scale-up.
This is a protocol paper with no outcome data yet reported. The quasi-experimental design with pre-post measurement but no separate control group limits causal inference. Sample size of ~120 pneumonia cases is modest for statistical analysis.
