The problem
Intervention: Kenya Cash Transfer for Orphans and Vulnerable Children - a national unconditional cash transfer program
Who it was tested with: 1,549 females aged 12 to 24 in Kenya; program targets orphans and vulnerable children.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"The evaluation was designed as a clustered randomized controlled trial and ran from 2007 to 2011, capitalizing on the existence of a control group, which was delayed entry to the program due to budget constraints." This is a randomized experimental design with a comparison group created through program rollout sequencing, providing strong causal evidence.
Follow-up period of four years may not capture full effects on marriage outcomes; design does not isolate mechanisms for why marriage was not affected while pregnancy was reduced.
