The problem
Intervention: Implementation of ICD coding systems for FGM/C diagnosis in Swiss university hospitals
Who it was tested with: Women and girls admitted to Swiss university hospitals from 30 FGM/C high-prevalence countries (2016-2018).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Exploratory descriptive study in Switzerland to assess the number of women and girls admitted to Swiss university hospitals between 2016 and 2018 from 30 FGM/C high prevalence countries (1), inpatients with a coded diagnosis of FGM/C (2)." The study documents that existing ICD coding practices systematically fail to identify the majority of FGM/C cases in this patient population, demonstrating the ineffectiveness of current hospital coding capacity.
Study is descriptive without intervention testing; does not assess why coding capacity is low or test solutions; limited to three Swiss university hospitals; does not include outpatient settings or primary care.
