The problem
Intervention: Analysis of vaccination coverage patterns during drought conditions to understand climate-health relationships
Who it was tested with: 137,379 children aged 0-12 months born 2011-2019 in 22 sub-Saharan African countries.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We investigated the association between drought and vaccination coverage using a retrospective analysis of Demographic and Health Surveys data in 22 sub-Saharan African countries among 137,379 children born from 2011 to 2019... In adjusted models, drought at date of birth was negatively associated with BCG vaccination." This retrospective longitudinal design with adjustment for confounders and use of nationally representative survey data provides stronger evidence than observational studies without comparison groups.
Heterogeneity in findings across countries limits generalisability. Analysis cannot determine causal mechanisms or country-specific modifying factors. Some children may have received vaccinations outside routine programmes.
