The problem
Intervention: Nurturing Care Groups (NCGs) - a behavior change program implemented in communities to change caregiver knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding child protection
Who it was tested with: 73,959 caregivers of children under 5 in 41 intervention communities across two ecological zones in Ghana; 20 control communities with no intervention.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Difference-in-difference linear regression was used to compare intervention and control results." This quasi-experimental design with comparison groups and baseline-to-endline measurement provides stronger evidence than pre-post designs alone, though causal claims require caution with self-report data.
Outcomes based on self-reported behavior change rather than observed practices; specific effect sizes not provided in abstract; long-term sustainability of behavior change not addressed
